MARRIAGE
For centuries, marriage took away the woman’s rights to own property, earn her own money, make contracts, or leave her husband.
In the past 20 years many countries have seen a shift in legal marital responsibilities and an end to the marital rape exemption, but in the developing world 150 million girls will still be married before their 18th birthday over the next decade.
Spousal abuse and gendered division of labor in marriage still has a profound impact on women today.
